I have left it here as it may be interesting to some as a chapter in the history of electronic communications.

"Khanya" is a Zulu word that means "shine", and a Sotho word that means "glory".

Both meanings feature in the joyful Paschal (Easter) hymn:

Shine! Shine! O New Jerusalem!
The glory of the Lord has shone on you!
Exult now and be glad, O Zion!
Be radiant, O pure Theotokos
in the Resurrection of your Son!

Khanya BBS is now a 24-hour Christian BBS. One of the main aims of Khanya BBS is, in conjunction with FamilyNet, OCNet and other networks, to provide an electronic communications service for churches and Christian NGOs, especially those who cannot afford a full Internet connection. We will do this by gating e-mail, newsgroups and echomail conferences between the Fido and UUCP formats, and making them available in either format.

The BBS is operated by the Orthodox Christian Network. The service is not be limited to Orthodox Christians, but will be for all Christian groups, though we will also be trying to open and improve communications between Orthodox Christians in the Second World, especially Russia, and others elsewhere. In many parts of the world BBS networks are no longer growing, as the Internet becomes increasingly accessible and popular, but in Russia, in particular, Fido-type networks are still growing rapidly, as they are far more affordable (and also far more under the control of the users).

Thanks to a generous donation from Doug Moore, of Computers for Christ in the USA, OCNet now has the hardware to be able to run such a BBS. Computers for Christ recycles computers that have been donated, and makes them available to churches and other Christian organisations that could not otherwise afford them.

We are testing various kinds of BBS software to see what is most suitable, and Khanya BBS is now running for 24 hours, with daily maintenance lasting 15 minutes being done at midnight, South African time. The number is (012) 333-0004. At the moment we are running Maximus BBS software, with the Watergate mail tosser, and BinkleyTerm. The system is connected to FamilyNet and CCCNet. You can send netmail to the FamilyNet address 8:7903/10 or the CCCNet address 220:27/1.
